Air Chief Marshal Swaroop Krishna Kaul was born on 20th December 1934 in Kashmiri Mohalla, Lucknow. He was commissioned in the Indian Air Force on 17th July 1954.During the war against Pakistan in 1971 Swaroop Krishna Kaul was the Commanding Officer of No.37 Fighter Bomber Squadron. He showed undaunted courage in this war. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for the exceptional performance in the war. He was promoted to the rank of Air Marshal and served as the AOC-in -C of Western Air Commnd from 1992 to 1993. Swaroop Krishna Kaul assumed the charge of Chief Staff of Indian Air Force in 1993 and served two years.He retired from service on 21st December 1995. Air Chief Marshal Swaroop Krishna Kaul received the Param Vishist Seva Medal for his distinguished service to the nation.
