Gharaunda is a major town in Karnal district of the northern state of India, Haryana. The district headquarters is in the city of Karnal, which is situated 18 km. south of Gharaunda. Delhi is located in the north of Delhi at a distance of 106 km. The nearest airport is at New Delhi and the nearest railway station is the Gharaunda Railway Station on the Delhi -Ambala line. It is located between 29.54° North latitude and 76.97° East longitude. The topography is generally flat at an average elevation of 237 metres above mean sea level.
According to the 2001 census report, Gharaunda had a population of 30,179. Males account for 54% of the population and females constitute 46% of the population. In Gharaunda, 14% of the population is less than six years of age. Gharaunda has an average literacy rate of 67%, which is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 74%, and the female literacy rate is 59%.
Chakravarthy Lake, the historic monuments in Kaithal and Panipat are interesting spots in the vicinity.
