Ghazal is a form of an ancient verse that originated in the 10th century Persion verse. It is derived from the Persian qasida. It used to formally be a short lyric composed in a single metre throughout with a single rhyme, in its style and content.The ghazal is a common from of Indian Music. A Ghazal, in short, is a collection of couplets (called sher), following the rules of Matla, Maqta, Beher, Qafiya, Radif, Khayal and Wazan. The second line of each couplet in a ghazal ends with the repetition of a refrain of one or a few words, known as a Radif.

Carnatic music is believed to have a divine origin, thus it has its origins in the Vedas. According to some scholars, Carnatic music derived certain classical music concepts from ancient Tamil music. The concept of Pann is related to Ragas used in Carnatic music. After the musical treatise, the Sangita-Ratnakara of Sarngadeva (1210-1247), the word Carnatic came to represent South Indian Classical Music as a separate system of music.

Qawwali is a vibrant Indian musical tradition, which stretches back more than 700 years. The songs, which constitute the qawwali range, are mostly in Urdu and Punjabi.The central themes of qawwali are love, devotion and longing (of man for the Divine). Songs in Qawwali are usually between 15 to 30 minutes long. The songs start with an instrumental prelude where the main melody is played on the harmonium, accompanied by the tabla, and which may include improvised variations of the melody.
