Indian Museum, Kolkata
Indian Museum at Kolkata is a versatile and multi disciplinary institution of national importance. The Museum was established at the Asiatic Society, the initial learned body in the country on 2nd February 1814. Transferred to the present building in 1878 with two galleries, the Museum has now over sixty galleries of Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Botany sections, spreading over ten thousand square feet area. Many rare specimens both Indian and Trans - Indian origin relating to Humanities and Natural Science are conserved and displayed in the galleries of these sections.
Sarnath Museum
Sarnath Museum , one of the famous Indian Museum is located at Saranath.Sarnath where Buddha delivered his first sermon more than 2500 years ago has a site museum whose prize exhibit is the enormous lion capital. Carved in pale yellowish-grey sandstone with black flecks, the sculpture has the characteristic highly polished surface. At the entrance hall are two figures of Buddha, one of which portrays the historic events at Sarnath. There are many other Buddha and bodhisattva figures on view. Among these the most outstanding is the Gupta period Buddha with hand raised in Abhaya or protection.
National Museum, Delhi

Government Museum: Chennai, India
Government Museum, Chennai is a multi-purpose State Government Museum, which is in the heart of the city, spreading to an area of 16.25 acres of land. Six independent buildings in this Museum campus have 46 galleries. In January 1851 AD, Dr. Edward Balfour, Medical Officer of the Governor`s Body guard was appointed as the First Officer in charge of the Government Museum. The notice in the Fort St. George Gazetteer dated 29th Aprtil 1851 AD contained the first announcement regarding the opening of the Madras Government Museum.This Indian museum houses priceless collections of Chola Art among others.
Museum of Folk and Tribal Art
Mr. K.C. Aryan famous art historian, painter, sculptor established Museum of Folk and Tribal Art in 1984.It houses one of the most distinctive collections of Indian folk, tribal and neglected art. He was the first Indian to place these priceless art objects on the world cultural map and dedicated all his life to accord them the status enjoyed by art objects created by court artists under royal patronage.The Museum on Folk and Tribal Art is meant to be a treasure trove for researchers, artists, students, art teachers, and general public.
Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai
The Prince of Wales Museum is a famous Indian Museum, The Prince of Wales Museum, a magnificent and strange structure is built in a confluence of Gothic and Moorish styles, crowned by a sparkling white dome. It boasts a good collection of ancient Indus Valley artifacts dating back to 2000 BC, plus some priceless Tibetan and Nepali Art. Folklore Museum: Mysore, India
The city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka gives the evidence of its being rich in history through its various temples, palaces, museums and many other. The Folklore museum in Mysore is located in the magnificent Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, which is on the Mysore University campus at Manasagangotri. The exhibits include an excellent collection of carved wooden figures from the different villages of Karnataka, rural costumes, utensils, ornaments, metal artifacts, implements and tools used in different rural professions. This Indian Museum has 6500 folk art and folklore articles on display and the museum is celebrated as one of the largest of its kind in Asia.
