Kamasutra

Kamasutra is the ancient scripture on love and pleasure. Composed by Vatsyayana this treatise on love is an elaboration on the art of love. Various sections of the book illustrate maxims on love. While most consider as a manual on the art of love, it is undeniable that Kamasutra contains historical relevance as well.

Every country has many books that deal in the art of love. This subject is dealt differently, and from various points of view, in every country. However, whenever we talk about the art of love in the Sanskrit literature, we tend to understand this theme, on the basis of the book, "Vatsyayana Kama Sutra" or Aphorisms on Love, by Vatsyayana from India. Vatsyayana must have lived between the first and sixth century A.D in India. Vatsyayana has given the art of love making a dual responsibility and given both the sexes equal level of satisfaction.Vatsyayana`s Kamasutra as an ancient acknowledgement of holistic living.

 
Kamasutra :Part 1 -- Sixty Four Arts
Kamasutra of Vatsayana Mentions the Sixty Four Arts. The aim of the Sixty Four Arts of the Kamasutra is not merely to be a good wife, but to be a skillful, playful, understanding, refined, sensual, beautiful and intelligent woman. The Kamasutra also expresses fostering of the male, his understanding of female nature and the importance of enlightening sensual moods and intimacy. The ancient Indians show great attention to detail of smell, light, music, food, drink and touch before the climax actually begins.

 
Kamasutra: Part 2 --Chapter VI
Kamasutra Part two deals on About a Wife. The chapter VI in Part II mentions On Biting And The Means To Be Employed With Regard To Women Of Different regions.Love knows no boundary and so there is no fixed time between the embrace, the kiss and the pressing or scratching with the nails or fingers. These mainly done at the time of foreplay while striking and making various sounds takes place at the time of copulation. But according to Vatsayana`s Kamasutra there is no rules and regulation in lovemaking. In kamasutra, the following are the different kinds of biting: The hidden bite ,The swollen bite,The point,The line of points,The coral and the jewel,The line of jewels,The biting of the boar, etc.

 
Kamasutra: Part 3, Chapter IV
Part III Chapter IV of Kamasutra deals on about things to be done only by the man, and the acquisition of the girl thereby. This chapter of kamasutra also offers suggestion to the girls to win over that man who is trying to impress her. Hence a slow touch with the foot and hand are recommended. The idea of winning over is the crux of this chapter of Kamasutra. It says that when the male and females are sitting together somewhere the man tells the woman that he wants to say her something and when they are alone in a place he expresses his love, he must be very expressive and makes her understand by signs and symbols only.

 
 
Kamasutra:Part 4, Chapter II
Kamasutra Part 4 mention On the manner of living of a virtuous woman, and of her behaviour during the absence of her husband. The chapter 4 of Kamasutra Part 4 have a detailed description On the conduct of the elder wife towards the other wives of her husband, and on that of a younger wife towards the elder ones. Also on the conduct of a virgin widow re-married; of a wife disliked by her husband; of the women in the king`s harem; and lastly on the conduct of a husband towards many wives. Kamasutra suggests that from the very beginning, a wife should endeavour to attract the heart of her husband, by showing to him continually her devotion, her good temper, and her wisdom.

 
Kamasutra: Part 5, Chapter VI
Part 5 of Kamasutra delas on About the Wives of Other People. Chapter VI of this part in Kamasutra provides information on about the Women of the Royal Harem, and of the Keeping of One`s Own Wife. Vatsayana in Kamasutra suggests that when a young man who knows everyone in a harem and is enjoying sex with everyone the matter should be kept quite and no one should know about what is happening. The people outside the harem should not know it also.

 
Kamasutra:Part 6 Chapter VI
Part VI of Kamasutra has information on the Courtesans. This part has six chapters. The Chapter VI has a detailed description on "Of Gains and Losses, Attendant Gains and Losses, and Doubts; and Lastly, the Different Kinds of Courtesans".This verses on this chapter of kamasutra part VI mentions `Men want pleasure, while women want money, and therefore this part, which treats of the means of gaining wealth, should be studied.` and `There are some women who seek for love, and there are others who seek for money; for the former the ways of love are told in previous portions of this work, while the ways of getting money, as practised by courtesans, are described in this part.

 
Kamasutra: Part 7, Chapter II
Part VII of Vatshyana`s Kamasutra mentions On The Means of Attracting Others to One`s Self. This is the last chapter of Kamasutra. The Chapter II of part 7 provides information on `Of The Means of Exciting Desire, and of the Ways of Enlarging the Lingam. Miscellaneous Experiments and Receipts`.The last verses of this Kamasutra chapter mentions `In short, an intelligent and prudent person, attending to Dharma and Artha, and attending to Kama also, without becoming the slave of his passions, obtains success in everything that he may undertake.
