Barigarh is a town as well as a nagar panchayat situated in the Chhatarpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the central part of the Indian subcontinent. The district headquarters of the Chhatarpur District are located in the town of Chhatarpur. The district spreads over an area of 8,687 square km. According to the 2001 census, the population of the district is 1,474,633 (a 27% boost from its 1991 population of 1,158,853). The Chhatarpur District is bordered by the state of Uttar Pradesh to the north, and the Madhya Pradesh districts of Panna to the east, Damoh to the south, Sagar to the southwest, and Tikamgarh to the west. The district is included under the Sagar Division. In the district is situated Khajuraho, the renowned temple city fashioned by the Chandela clan of Rajputs in the tenth century. Other prominent tourist spots in the district are in Arjunkund, Naogaon (Nowgong), Bijawar, Ken Gharial, Maharajpur, Chachai Waterfall, and Hanuman Tauria. Before India got her Independence, the Chhatarpur district constituted a number of princely states, namely Bijawar, Gaurihar, Alipura, Chhatarpur, and Lugasi, along with most of Charkhari and portions of Panna and Ajaigarh. After independence, the district was incorporated under the new state of Vindhya Pradesh. Vindhya Pradesh was in turn fused into Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956.
As per the 2001 India census, Barigarh has a population of 8589. Males make up 54% of the population and females comprise 46%. The mean literacy rate of Barigarh is 50%, lower than the nationwide standard of 59.5%. 65% of the males and 35% of the females are literate. 19% of the population consists of children below six years of age.
