Mother Teresa, Indian Social Activist, Nobel Prize Winner
She dedicated her entire life towards serving the sick and the poor.

Mother Teresa, social reformerMother Teresa was probably one of the greatest women in the history of the world, who dedicated her entire life for serving humanity. Though she was not an Indian by birth, she spent most of the parts of her life in India, serving the poor and unfortunate people of India. She was born in Yugoslavia, on 27th August, 1910 and her original name was Agnes Goxa Bojaxiu. Mother Teresa was very compassionate right from her childhood and she decided to leave her home and came to Kolkata for serving humanity, in the year of 1929, at the age of only 19 years.

One of the most prominent reasons for Mother Teresa`s coming to Kolkata was that she was actually moved by the poverty quite deeply and she dedicated her entire life towards serving the sick and the poor. After coming to Kolkata, Mother Teresa started to live in a small room and she nursed the ill back to health, for a long period of nine years, in that small room. She had the habit of roaming around in the dangerous, dark and dirty streets of Kolkata at night and covering the cold and offering food and shelter to the poor.

Compassion, dignity and sympathy are the terms or the words that can describe Mother Teresa best and her every action was marked by these virtues. She became successful to open a number of institutions for helping the downtrodden, through her endless efforts. The institutes like the Missionaries of Charity, Nirmal Hriday and Shishu Bhavan are among the most important of those and these institutions are housing the mentally and physically challenged children, at the moment. Mother Teresa won the most coveted and the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in the year of 1979, for her extraordinary contribution to humanity and the Indian government bestowed upon her the Bharat Ratna award in the year of 1980. She left the earthly abode on 5th September, 1997.
