| City Palace , Alwar, Rajasthan
| |
| The City Palace in Alwar is an 18th century monument. The architecture of this building presents both Rajput and Mughal schools. Besides this palace an artificial lake was constructed in the year 1815 by Maharaja Vinay Singh. Alwar is one of those places that has a history of several kings and brave hearts. Hence the district too is dotted with such monuments that will instantly remind the travelers of the eras of the kings. The surrounding buildings offer a swift glimpse in to religious beliefs of the dwellers of the palaces. Several temples had been constructed at the banks of the lake.
The striking construction inside the palace is the chhatri that has a Bengali styled roof and arches. This is known as Moosi Maharani ki chhatri. Within this chhatri or cenotaph a company garden had been built. This garden is known as Purjan Vihar. It was built in 1868 by Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh. It was further beautified by Maharaja Mangal Singh in 1885. As a summer retreat this garden is perfect. Till date it provides a perfect picnic spot for the tourists as well as for the local people. After all who would not like to rejuvenate himself in the cool shades of the trees on a sultry summer morning.
In the upper storey of City Palace, Alwar the Vinay Vilas Mahal is located. Presently it is the Government Museum. Priceless Rajput and Mughal paintings are on display here. The travelers can also come across paintings by the artists of Alwar School. These paintings date back to 18th and 19th centuries. Rare manuscripts written in Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic and Urdu are also to be found in the museum. Amongst the well known ones are Gulistan, Bostan and Waqiat-e-Babri. Weaponry dating back to the by-gone eras are also put on display at this museum.
