
Medical College, Kolkata or Calcutta Medical College was set up in 1835 in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. It is the first college of European medicine in Asia. The aim of the college was to train manpower in the principles and practices of medical science in accordance with the European model.
In 1764, the British East India Company established the Indian Medical Service to take care of the medical requirements of the European in British India. Towards the end of 1833, a committee was appointed by the government of William Bentinck in Bengal to report on the condition of medical education in the state. A new medical college was proposed which was named as the Calcutta Medical College (CMC), which was established on 20th February 1835. The classes were started in an old house at the back of the Hindu College. In May 1835, new premises were constructed on land donated by Motilal Sheel. The College has undergone several changes ever since its inception. Till 2001 the admitted batch of the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The Calcutta Medical College is now formally affiliated to the newly established West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The college and the hospital are funded and administered by the Government of West Bengal.
The Calcutta Medical College offers, undergraduate medical degree that is MBBS. The postgraduate medical degrees offered by the college include MD (in Medicine and Medicine-related disciplines like Dermatology), MS (in Surgery and Surgery-related disciplines like E.N.T.) and MS (in Obstetrics and Gynecology). The Diploma course, which is for two-year duration, includes DGO (Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology). Nursing course offered by the college includes Diploma in Nursing (GNM). The college also offers paramedical and technician courses which includes, DMLT, Diploma in Medical Lab Technology; DRD, Diploma in Radio Diagnosis; DRT, Diploma in Radio Therapy; DALS, Diploma in ENT; DCCT, Diploma in Cardio Thoracic; DPFT, Diploma in Cardio Thoracic; DPT, Diploma in Physical Medicine; ECG, Diploma in Eco Cardiogram and ECG, Bridge Course for Eco Cardiogram.
The College and the hospital buildings are made of redbrick. The academic building consists of three large lecture theatres, library and anatomy dissection hall with museum, several laboratories and oval shaped field just in front of the administrative block. Some of the blocks in the campus are Medical College and Hospital Building, Ezra Hospital

The hospital services of the Calcutta Medical College includes, outdoor services, indoor services, counseling and the diagnostic and investigation.
