Karwar Beach gets it name from the word "Karwad" as the colonial rulers had trouble pronouncing it. In 1862, British East India Company made this place their head quarters in Goa. From that time, Karwar beach was the sea trade centre from the Arabian Sea. Earlier the Arabs, Dutch East India Company, Portuguese East India Company, French East India Company traded here.

In Arabic, Karwar was called "Baithkhol" with a meaning Bay of Safety. The Mughal Explorer Ibn battuta passed through this tract. Many Indian commodities exported to foreign countries were brought from the Deccan by this route as this port was considered safe during all seasons.

With its unadulterated tranquillity, Karwar Beach is an ideal picnic spot in Karnataka. It has all the ingredients that make a perfect outing in weekend. The soft waves, palm trees on the fringes of the beach and silver sand make the ideal ambience for the nature lovers.

Karwar beach becomes wonderful to the tourists for its unique speciality. It is special because it lies as a small island near Goa with one side facing the Arabian Sea and the other side the Western Ghats.

Karwar beach consists of five adjoining beaches. The most well-known among them is Devbagh beach. Devbagh beach is famous for water sports activities. The visitors of Karwar beaches engage in various types of water sports including fishing, boating, snorkelling, kayaking, and dolphin hunting. These activities are carried out with the help of guides arranged by local private resorts.

Karwar beach is famous for its market and sea food. The Goan cuisine is unique in many aspects. They are prepared in different styles with spice and coconut. One may also enjoy the cuisines prepared from fresh water mussels and fish varieties.

One can visit Karwar beach from September and lasts till May. The tourists enjoy the warmth of the sun on one side and the cool breeze from the Western Ghats on the other.
