
Arunachal Pradesh, the northeastern state of India is well known for its
bamboo and cane crafts. This is because of the availability of abundant cane and bamboo. Bamboos and canes are used to make colourful basket mats, cane belts, smoking pipes, jewelry etc. The traditional cane and bamboo products are mainly available in the districts of East Kameng.
Weaving is also an important craft in the state, which has now become a full-fledged industry. Arunachal Pradesh is dominated by the tribals who use bark fibres, goat`s hair, cotton and wool for weaving. They make ceremonial coats and shawls handbags, skirts, lungis, shawls and carpets. The basic colours used in the weaves are black, yellow dark blue, green and scarlet. The actual weaving is done with a bamboo tube.The impact of the Tibetan, Burmese, Bhutanese and Assamese cultures is reflected in the weavings. It is dominated by geometric designs, which varies from formal arrangements to lines and bands. A special type of weaving, the Singpho weaving is famous for its artistic patterns. The Tangas are renowned for their spun dyed clothes out of which handbags are made. The Tanga and the Singpho women are known for their making artistic ceremonial costumes.
Wancho of the Tirap district of the state is famous for
woodcarvings. Various figures like warriors, miniature morung, figurines depicting different images of rural life, animal figures, colorful masks and images of Lord Buddha are carved out of wood. The Monpas, Khamtis, Wanchos, Phom and Konyak tribes are expert in this craft.
The ivory and
metal craft of Arunachal Pradesh is exquisite and beautiful. Ornaments are made of brass, bone, ivory, silver and gold are crafted by simple tools by the tribes. The Nishis and Sulungs specialize in brass smithy. They make ornaments, dishes, sacred bells and smoking pipes out of metals. The Khamtis work mainly in gold, iron, silver and ivory.
Carpet making is an important occupation of Arunachal Pradesh especially in the districts of Tawang, West Kameng, Changlang and Upper Siang. The carpet produced here are famous all over the world because of the design and the texture. The other items produced are wall hangings, cushion pads, telephone pads, floor coverings etc.
The Dafla women are skilled in the art of pottery. The finished pots are not subjected to polishing and burnishing. They are kept in the shade for drying. When the pots have dried they put in a fire outside the house.
Jewelry of the tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh is an exquisite craft. Silver ornaments are more common in the state. Ornaments made of bead are also made by the tribal. The Noctes and the Wanchos tribals weave the beads in their own style using their distinct patterns. The Wanchos also make ear ornaments from glass beads, wild seeds, cane, bamboo and reed. Each bead has its own value, luster and color. The common silver ornaments made by the Aka women are melu which is a flat-shaped ornament worn over the chest, rombin which are big ear bulbs, the ear rings are called gichuli and gejjui are the wristlets.
