Sikandar Lodhi was the second ruler of the Pashtun Lodi dynasty in Agra. He became Sultan after the death of his father Bahlul Khan Lodi on July 17,1489. Sikandar Lodi was his father`s nominated successor. But his older brother Barbak Shah, the viceroy of Junapur also claimed the throne and thus they two got involved in a dispute. However, Sikandar Lodi could get rid of his trouble and was able to claim the throne through delegation. Thereby he could avoid a massive bloodshed. He allowed his brother to govern Junapur. Sikandar Lodi had also differences with his uncle Alam Khan, who also demanded the throne but he could solve this problem too.
Sikandar Lodi was a competent ruler, who was very kind to his subjects and could expand Lodhi dynasty up to Bihar and Gwalior. He also made pact with Alauddin Hussain Shah of Bengal. Sikandar Lodi could bring his native Afghan nobles under his control and patronized trade across his kingdom. In 1503, Sikandar Lodhi acrredited the building which is a present day city of Agra.
Sikandar Lodi died in 1517. His death was a loss to his subjects. The burial tomb of Sikandar Lodi is present at Delhi.
