Dibrugarh University was established in 1965 under the Dibrugarh University Act of 1965. The university is situated at Rajabheta. It is at a distance of five kilometers to the south of Dibrugarh. It is a teaching cum affiliating University and the territorial jurisdiction of the Dibrugarh University extends to seven districts of Upper Assam. It includes the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. The University covers an area of 500 acres out of which 60 acres are meant for tea plantation. The University is well connected and the NH 37 passes through the University campus.
The University through seventeen departments in the campus as well as affiliated colleges scattered in the districts imparts education in various disciplines which are, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medical, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law, Science and Technology, computer Science and Teacher`s training. The University offers graduate, postgraduate and diploma courses. Some of the departments conduct two years Integrated Diploma Course in Tai Language, Certificate Courses in Computer Application, Post graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) and many such courses. It has also introduced a postgraduate Diploma Course in Bio-Informatics. From 1998 onwards it has started three one year courses, DoEACC`O` Level, Repair and Maintenance of PC Hardware and Repair and Maintenance of Course of Consumer Electronic Equipments. This was started when it received financial assistance from the Department of Electronics (DoE), Government of India under its Employment Generation Training Schemes for the North East.
The University has been accredited with grade B by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
