Sage Vyagrahapada has been one of the ancient astrologers who contributed to the analytical astrology with the calculation of horoscopes. He mainly belong to the group of Ankanasastra which is also called Grahasamaya and Navagrahasamaya, that has been composed by the devotees of Lord Shiva enshrined in Vaikkomb which was established by Vyagrahapada. The series which has been incorporated by Sage Vyagrahapada is an interesting treatise in the field of astrology, based on the study of horoscope and analyse them to calculate the future. This is elaborated into 389 verses further divided into four chapters; where each of the twelve lagna rashis is divided into nine ahkanas, each ahakana being presided over by a planet which reflects its own effect on the horoscope.
Sage Vyagrahapada is one such guru of Kerala community who along with astronomical Siddhantas practiced the practical science of astrology which was easily accepted by the local communities. This group had been the followers of Lord Shiva who has been treated as the forefather of planets and any study related to him.
Thus, the land of Kerela which produced almost all the prominent astronomers of ancient Indian astronomy, witnessed the growth of the other section of Hindu astronomy in the form of astrology which attracted a number of scholars as well as gurus who with their powers could contribute more positively to the study. This was mainly based on the orthodox interpretation of ancient astronomy. While Siddhata Jyotisa had already differentiated between these two wings, a practical growth was visible in Central parts of Kerala who developed a science of astrology based on the movement of Sun as well as the moon.
