Varun Aaron, also known as Varun Raymond Aaron, is an Indian cricket player hailing from Jamshedpur. He mainly plays as a right-arm fast bowler. He began his cricket career by playing for Jharkhand U-19. Following this, he played in Jharkhand Ranji team. He made his debut in One Day International (ODI) as a representative of India in October 2011 whereas his Test debut was in the following month. He marked in debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Daredevils in the year 2011.
Born on 29th October 1989, Varun Aaron was spotted by a talent scout at the age of 15 and since then he was a part of the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai. Since childhood he has been a great admirer of Andy Roberts and he has always focussed on pace. Soon after making his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2008-09 seasons, playing for Jharkhand, he acquired two stress fractures at the back. Varun Aaron possesses a smooth run-up and a repeatable action and has been consistent in blowing in excess of 140 km/h (87 mph) from close to the stumps with decent control.
Apart from Delhi Daredevils, he has also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a representative of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Varun Aaron grabbed 13 wickets in the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy in which he bowled at 153 km/h (95 mph) delivery. His name was also included in the India Emerging Players squad that in the year 2011 went to Australia. His impressive performance in the match earned him a call in the India ODI for the series in England. However in the tour he did not get an opportunity to play in any game and remained benched but he made his debut in Mumbai when England returned for an ODI series in October 2011. In his debut match for the national team, Varun Aaron successfully derived pace from a low and slow Wankhede pitch in the fourth ODI of the 2011 India-England ODI series. He bagged 3 wickets for 24 runs and all those three were bowled out. In his second match against England at Eden Gardens he bowled for 3 overs, grabbing the wicket of Alastair Cook, again bowled, and this proved to be a key strike for India.
Varun Aaron made his way to the Indian Test squad for the first time in a home series against West Indies. He marked his Test debut on 22nd November 2011 in the 3rd Test at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He bagged 3 wickets for 106 runs in his first innings. Later in 2014, he was selected for the England tour. After 2 years, Varun made his international comeback on 25th January 2014, following a back injury. He also played in the 2014 Asia Cup in which he bowled 7.5 overs bagging one wicket. In 2014 July he got selected for India for the five match Test series in England and appeared in the 4th Test at Old Trafford.
