Udayadivakara

Udayadivakara is mainly known for his elaborate commentary, known as, Sundari which he wrote on Laghubhaskariya. This has been considered as one of the vital texts on Laghubhasakriya.

Udayadivakara, born in southern part of India, was an ancient Indian astronomer who went according to the teachings of Bhaskara I. Also known as Jyotisikabatta he had been popularly known for his elaborate work on the translation of Laghubhaskariya. The latter was originally written by Bhaskara I. Indian astronomy had two major sections, while one was led by Aryabhata I and Bhaskara I who believed on the scientific calculations, the other section believed in the old orthodox method of calculating the astronomical changes based on the teachings of Brahmagupta. Udayadivakara was the follower of Govindsvamin who spent his larger time in translating Mahabhasakraiya. Like him his disciples too went for translating the other volumes Bhaskara`s work. Sundari Udayadivakara includes as many as twenty verses from an unnamed mathematician Jayadeva and provides his own comments on his work.

Thus, the work of Udayadivakara can be considered as one of compilations as well as translation of the original text which paved the way for further innovations. The group of astronomers who were engaged in translating the work of Bhaskara I mainly concentrated on calculating the longitude of the sun, moon and the earth which engaged Indian astronomy for long.
