The college was established and is being run and managed by the Sharavathi Education Trust. The Sharavathi Dental College & Hospital (SDCH), Shimoga is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangaluru and also to the Indian Dental Association (IDA). All the students of the college are being provided opportunity to take part in IDA activities where they can enhance their knowledge, talent, and skill sets at conferences and (CDE) programs and journals. For facilitating the practical education of its students further, the college also has a well equipped and with a fully functional outpatient hospital, where it treats the patients at subsidised costs. The Hospital has all the necessary modern dental equipment for diagnoses and treatments and the students are often given the opportunity to work side by side with their faculty members.

The Sharavathi Dental College & Hospital (SDCH), Shimoga mainly offers the undergraduate course of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and it admits 40 students in the course, every year. The college admits the students in the Merit seats and Merit Payment seats, through the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Government of Karnataka, India. The students are required to have a minimum educational qualification to be considered eligible for admission. The candidates, who have passed the pre-university examination of the Board of the Karnataka or any other equivalent exam in the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English (PCBE), are eligible for admission. The students are required to have obtained at least 50% of aggregate marks in the above-mentioned subjects.
