It was set up in 1984, under the voluntary sector and was the efforts of the Hon. Sri. Balasheb Vikhe Patil. The aim of the college was to train manpower in the region to become health practitioners in their own environment. Its objective was also to extend advanced medical facilities to the rural needy.

Rural Medical College, Ahmednagar is affiliated to the University of Pune and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The Medical Council of India, New Delhi, recognizes the medical degree offered by the college. It has also made it to the General Medical Council of U.K. and the World Health Organization (W.H.O.), Geneva. The College offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in modern medicine with special emphasis on community need based medical education. To enable interaction at the international level and to update the medical courses with the latest developments, the college has exchange programmes of students, staff and collaborative research, with various institutions namely, The Linkoping Health University, Sweden, Institute of Social Medicine- Medical university of Pecs, Hungary, Faculty of Medicine, Education, development and Research- University of Limburg, Netherlands.
