Ratna Barkakati

Ratna Barkakati`s (1897-1963) Sewali (1932) is a collection of poems that exhibits the glow of a poetic gift for mystical effects where one can find a pleasant quest and insight set accompanied by brightness of colour and sound. A suggestive and restrained style marks his writings. Supreme Being manifests itself in the loveliness of nature which is comprehended through inner perception; it is this concept which has been used in his best poems like Sewali. His love-poetry is above all desires. The object of his desire centres on intellectual passion which submerges all feelings of duality into oneness.

In Tilottama pleasure is spiritualized into joy and joy becomes enlightened with an intellectual passion. Viswa Haran is calm and passionate love lyric that combines an imaginative romanticism with the discipline of a sober form. Barkakati introduced a chiselled architectural design in poetry. This technical finish is marked by a note of accuracy and equipoise. Some of his poems are pantheistic in nature. At times he fuses skilfully the musical into the logical. His music is not of the ethereal type. Due to this reason some of his poems appear as emotionally decadent. His other important work is Tarpan (1953).
