The tournament organisers, BCCI first divided the teams into five different zones, depending on their geographical positions and then made the teams play against each other in their respective zones. Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, Central Zone League Matches: All the 5 teams that had been playing under the Central Zone in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several years were present there in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 also. The tournament is famous for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and the teams that played under the Central Zone were mainly coming from the Central region of India. The teams included the likes of Vidarbha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Railways and Madhya Pradesh and they competed against each other very hard for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. Though all the teams tried their best to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament, the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh eventually became successful to do so from the zone. The teams earned total of 66 and 58 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches and entered into the knock out level from the Central zone.

The tournament is quite famous in the world for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and all the five teams of the East Zone were the regular participants in the tournament. The teams were representing different states from the Eastern region of India and all of them tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. Securing a berth in the knock out level of the tournament was also another principal aim of the teams. However, only the Bengal and Bihar teams could eventually do so. The Bengal and Bihar teams earned total of 69 and 66 points respectively from the zonal level league matches and they competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship title.

The teams were mainly belonged to the Northern region of India and all of them had been playing in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several editions. The teams included the likes of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Haryana, Services and Himachal Pradesh and they played against each other for claiming the top spot in the zone. All the teams also tried their best for getting a chance for competing in the knock out level of the tournament. However, only the teams like Haryana and Delhi eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches. The Haryana and Delhi teams earned total of 97 and 90 points, respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they were also promoted to the knock out level of the tournament.

The tournament is one of the most popular and fruitful domestic cricket tournaments in India and most of the teams that played against each other in the West Zone were representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams included the likes of Saurashtra, Bombay, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Baroda and all of them tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams also gave their best efforts to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches and they also eventually became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament.
