These microorganisms causing meningitis spread through coughing, sneezing, or sharing eating utensils, a toothbrush also a cigarette. People in close contact with individuals suffering from these strains of meningitis and people traveling to the countries of the world where these types of meningitis are prevalent.

Antibiotic is another way that provides prevention of meningitis. People in close contact with the infected person are prescribed with antibiotics such as rifampicin. These antibiotics help in protecting them from acquiring the dangerous germ. Another antibiotic that weakens or destroys bacteria is ciprofloxacin which is recommended for older children and adults.

Viral Meningitis can be prevented through several means. According to researches prevention of meningitis through routine childhood vaccinations against mumps and polio proved to be effective. The vacations have virtually eliminated infection from those viruses, which cause the most serious types of viral meningitis. Viral meningitis can also be prevented by washing hands regularly. It can also be avoided by carefully washing and preparing food. Besides immunisation and antibiotics, meningitis can be controlled by maintaining the immune system by getting enough rest, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Thus if a conscious effort is made, meningitis can be prevented from extending.
