Praveen Mahadeo Thipsay is an Indian grandmaster who has won many chess championships.

Praveen Thipsay, Indian Chess PlayerPraveen Mahadeo Thipsay is an Indian grandmaster born on 12th August 1959. He is a popular figure in the Indian chess circuit and has won many Indian championships including 1982, 1984, 1985, 1989, 1992, 1993 and 1994 and played for India in the Chess Olympiads of 1982, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002.

For the first time in his career, Praveen Mahadeo Thipsay tied with Kevin Spraggett in the Commonwealth Chess Championship in the year 1985. Then in the year 1998 he tied with Sergey Zagrebelny, Mohamad Al-Modiahki and Amanmurad Kakageldyev for 4-7th in the Asian Chess Championship in Iran. Again in 2004 he tied for 2-6th behind Marat Dzhumaev in Pune and in the same year tied for 2nd and 3rd with Saidali Iuldachev and Chakkravarthy Deepan in Lucknow. He won the FIDE rated All India Open Ches Tournament in Mangalore n the year 2007.

During his peak period in August 1981, Praveen Mahadeo Thipsay was ranked number 141 in the world as his ratings were similar to 2571. His best single performance was at Brighton in BCF Championship in the year 1984 where he scored 6.5 out of 10 possible points (65%) against 2549 rated opposition, for a performance rating of 2623. He was India`s number 24 with Elo rating of 2469, according to the 2009 FIDE ratings.
