Pankaj Roy was a popular name in the arena of Indian cricket who played primarily as a right-handed opening batsman. He was born on 31st May 1928 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was best recognized for creating the world record for opening partnership of 413 runs along with Vinoo Mankad at Chennai against the team of New Zealand. The record was intact till the year 2008. For his contributions in the field of cricket, he was honoured with the esteemed Padma Shri Award. His son Pranab Roy and his nephew Ambar Roy were also associated with the same profession and played Test cricket for India. Pankaj Roy died on 4th February 2001 in Kolkata.
First Class Career of Pankaj Roy
Pankaj Roy represented the Bengal cricket team in the domestic cricket in India. In 1946-47 on his first-class debut he scored a century. In the following matches he scored all together 33 hundreds with a total of 11868 first class runs at an average of 42.38.
Test Career of Pankaj Roy
In the year 1951 Pankaj Roy was selected for the Indian squad when England toured India. He made his Test debut at Delhi. Although in his debut innings he only scored 12, in the series he scored 2 centuries. Roy toured England in the following summer but had a contrasting series. In his 7 innings he made 5 ducks which included Frank Tyson"s debut first class wicket. This also included a pair at Old Trafford. In the year 1959, in England, he captained India; however the Indian team lost the match. Pankaj Roy was known to be a careful player having a solid defence. At times he also attacked well.
