Karimuddin Murad

Karimuddin Murad was a playwright in Urdu language. He was also a great poet. Karimuddin Murad was a known name in Parsi theatre. He was born in Bareilly in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in 1842, who was trained as a maulvi i.e. an expert in Islamic theology. Besides religion, he also studied Urdu, Arabic, and Persian. He was well-versed in Hindustani classical music in modern India, and could play several instruments.

Life in Theatre for Karimuddin Murad
In 1882, when Dadabhai Thuthi founded a new company, the Bombay Natak Mandali, Murad was brought from Bareilly as its resident dramatist. He wrote four plays for Thuthi. The names can be mentioned as Gul Bakavali i.e. "Bakavali`s Flower" in 1883, Gulistan-e-khandan-e-Haman i.e. `The Garden of Haman`s Family` in 1885, Chitra Bakavali i.e. "Bakavali`s Picture" in 1887, and Khttdadad in 1890. His scriptwriting success can be gauged from the fact that the first three ran for many months. His Gul Bakavali even ran for years. However, the company broke up thereafter. In preparing a English theatre in India, Murad, who knew no English, did not work directly with the original but from a Gujarati language adaptation, Dosabhai Faramji Randhelias Khusro na khavind Khuda i.e. "God Is Khusro`s Protector" in 1870.
