Jyotishtoma

Jyotishtoma is a great sacrifice or a great good action. In this sacrifice Soma is regarded as the most important part.

Jyotishtoma is the other name of Soma ceremony. Jyotishtoma is made up of two words, Jyotis and stoma. Jyotis means light and stoma means mass or multitude. Hence Jyotishtoma means mass or rays of light. Jyotishtoma consists of a number of equal parts. At first it was believed that Jyotishtoma consisted of three parts but later had four, five, and seven sub-divisions. When Jyotishtoma refers to the rays of light, then all the sub-divisions are the rays of light. In Mimansa, Jyotishtoma is described as the seven rays of light

As said Soma refers to the mind and Jyotishtoma refers to the rays of light. Thus Soma or the mind refers to the same. In the Puranas it is said that the energy of the mind or the moon is electric, for it is said to create the clouds charged with lightning; and so we may conclude that the most important among the rays of light is the electric or the electro-magnetic ray.

Jyotishtoma is thus the great sacrifice for the purpose of obtaining Swarga or heaven.
