The plant is a slender vine or ascending shrub that can grow up to several metres. The leaves of the plant are ovate, broadly cordate, having a length of 6-12 cm and the apex is acute or acuminate, with sub-entire, angled or broadly 3-5-lobed margins. The red flowers of the plant are erect, and usually borne in long-peduncled, few-flowered axillary cymes that are up to 15 cm long. The 5 obtuse, green sepals of the plant have a length of 6 mm, and they are spurred from the apex.

The corolla tube of Ipomoea coccinea L is slender, slightly enlarged upward, having a length of 2.5 cm, with the limb spreading. The corolla is of 2 cm in diameter. The fruits or capsules of the plant are sub-globose or ovoid, having a diameter of 0.6 cm. The plant mainly flowers between the months of November and January and fruits in January and February, in central India. Though it is a native to tropical America, the plant is presently being cultivated in many parts of India as an ornamental plant. It is occasionally naturalised, as well. The plant has only one medicinal property that is its root is used for inducing sneezing.
