Government Dental College, Bangaluru, KarnatakaThe Government Dental College (GDC) is one of the most famous and highly equipped medical institutions in the state of Karnataka, India. The college is situated in the city of Bangaluru and was established in 1958. The main mission of the college is to offer quality medical education to the students of the state and providing good treatment facilities to the people of Karnataka, is also another aim of the college. The college was provided with facilities for an office and lectures at the Bangalore Medical College, at the beginning and it arranged the clinical facilities at the Outpatient Department of Victoria Hospital. The college is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka.

The clinics and lecture classes of the Government Dental College (GDC), Bangaluru were shifted to the present building of the college in 1962. The entire premise of the college was inaugurated by the then Union Health Minister, India, Dr. Sushila Nayar in 1964. A number of 10 students were admitted in the college in 1958 for the first time and the first batch of four new dental graduates passed from the college, in 1964. The college introduced the first Postgraduate course in Orthodontia in 1965 and it started offering the courses in Periodontia and Oral Surgery in 1967, Oral medicine, Preventive and Social Dentistry in 1973-74 and Conservative dentistry in 1977. All the courses got the due recognition from the Dental Council of India (DCI). The college also introduced the Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist course, within the next few years.

The Government Dental College (GDC), Bangaluru was selected by the World Health Organisation (WHO) under its 0208 project in 1965. The college was selected for giving assistance with the objective of improving the dental education in India. A new curriculum and syllabus was formed fore the college, incorporating subjects which were hitherto not taught but had immense practical implications. The subjects like Anthropology, bio-statistics; Genetics, Nutrition and Dietetics, Preventive and Social Dentistry etc. were incorporated in the new syllabus. The college has established itself as one of the most renowned institutions for the training and is also counted among the best institutions in South East Asia.

The Government Dental College (GDC), Bangaluru offers a large number of courses at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels. The courses are offered in a variety of branches of medical science. The college is situated in Bangaluru, surrounded by some other premier medical institutes like Bangalore Medical College, Victoria Hospital, Minto Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Mahabodhi Emergency and Casualty Hospital, Vani Vilas Maternity Hospital, Venkateshwara Institute of E.N.T etc. The college attracts a large number of patients from all over the state and provides varied type of clinical material for teaching training and research purpose. The main courses that the GDC, Bangaluru offers include the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), and the PG Diploma courses like Diploma in Dental Mechanics and Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
