Of the other disorders of the female genitalia, the displacement of the uterus or the womb is probably the most disturbing.

Causes and Symptoms: The uterus is slung in the pelvic-cavity and has freedom of movement backwards and forwards, and upwards and downwards. In most cases, its displacement is downwards. In this case, it is known as prolapse. In this condition, the uterus slips downwards in between the bowel and the bladder. In very serious cases, it may actually protrude out of the vagina. This condition occurs generally in older women and also usually to those who are stout, have a considerable amount of work to do, and have in childbirth suffered laceration of the parts that should support the uterus.

Prolapse of the uterus is one of the twenty Yoni Vyapagatas described by Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagabhatta. One of the teachers, Madhava, has categorized these disorders as: five belonging to the class of diseases produced by vitiation of vayu, five caused by vitiation of pitta, another five caused by vitiation of kapha, and the rest caused by the vitiation of all the three doshas. Prolapse of the uterus is a condition which is caused, among other things, by the vitiation of all the three doshas of the body and is not easy to deal with.

Medicines & Prescriptions:
Vachadi Churna, Prasanna: 3 gm of Vachadi Churna and 24 ml of Prasanna may be mixed and fried in about 5 gm of ghee and taken once daily.

Raja Pravartani Bolaadi Vata or Rajodoshahari Vati: 240 mg to be taken Vati or thrice daily.

When the condition has improved a little, tonics like bhasmas of gold, silver, or copper should be administered.

In some difficult cases, surgical intervention may be needed to repair the weakened parts that hold the uterus in its proper place.

Diet and Other Regimen: A light but nutritious diet is recommended.

The patient must be allowed to have proper rest. Her movements should be restricted, and lifting of weights or vigorous work should be prohibited, as it is likely to aggravate the condition.
