Development of Unani Medicine during Humayun

Unani medicine, a blend of Arabic medicine or Tibbi with Ionian-Greek medicine was introduced in India during the 7th century A.D. It however, gained prominence during the rule of the Mughal Dynasty. The Mughal rulers established several hospitals, clinics and dispensaries that were run by notable physicians. These physicians also served the royal courts and authored several valuable books that augmented the growth and development of Unani medicine. Two of the notable physicians in the court of Humayun have been mentioned below:

Khawaja Khawind Mahmud
Khawaja Khawind Mahmud, a famous physician, was a native of Persia. He migrated to India during the reign of Humayun. He left his mark in the medical history of India through his valuable contributions.

Maulana Muhammad Fazl
Maulana Muhammad Fazl was a distinguished philosopher and physician in the royal court of Humayun. In 1539 he compiled an encyclopaedia on twelve different subjects that also included medicine. The Hakim named it as Humayuni, after the name of the Emperor. As evident from one of his works, the surgeons of that period performed plastic operations successfully. According to an incident that took place in 1542 A.D. at Umarkot, one Kaufer was instructed to cut a portion of one Husayn`s ear as a punishment. The Kaufer, however, overacted and accidently cut off the whole ear. The king upon being informed of the incident became very furious. He called for Maulana Muhammad Fazl and had the ear stitched. The Emperor himself assisted in the operation of Husayn and apologized to him.
