Descendants of Yadu

Vishnu Purana has given a detailed account of the descendants of Yadu. It is believed that whoever hears about the descendants of Yadu shall be freed from all iniquities and shall get close to the supreme spirit because Lord Vishnu was reincarnated in the Yadu family. According to the Vishnu Purana Yadu had four sons Sahasrajit, Kroshti, Nala and Raghu. Sahasrajit`s eldest son was Sasajit. The latter, too, had three sons namely Haihaya, Venu and Haya. It was from the family of Haihaya that a king shone and became the ruler of seven insular continents and the master of a thousand arms. It was Kritaviryya`s son was Aryunu. This king propitiated the sage Dattatreya, the descendant of Atri who was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and had obtained from him a thousand arms, acting always justly, governing the world with justice, protecting it impartially, victory ever his enemies and death by the hands of a person renowned in the three worlds. By these means he governed the earth powerfully and justly celebrated ten thousand sacrifices.

About king Aryunu it has been said that the kings of the earth shall never equal him in sacrifices, liberality, in devotion in good manners and in self control. In his reign nothing was lost or injured, so he governed the whole earth with an undecayed health, prosperity, power and strength for eighty-five thousand years.

King Aryunu had hundred sons of which five were principal, namely Sura, Vrishana Madhu and Jayadwaja. The son of Jayadwaja was Talajangha who had a hundred sons, named after him Talajanghas. The eldest of these was Vitipotra, another was Bharata who had two sons namely Vrisha and Sujata. The son of Vrisha was Madhu; he had a hundred sons, the chief of whom was Vrishna and from him the family obtained the name of Vrishni. From the name of their father Madhu they were called Madhavas and from the name of their common ancestor Yadu they were all called Yadavas.
