Datar is a welcome ceremony of the bride to her husband"s house post marriage. When the couple has entered the house, a sensitive ceremony is performed where the parents of the groom wash the feet of their daughter in law. This is the beginning of the Datar ritual. Then the bride sprinkle milk drops in the entire home. Thereafter her head is covered by her in-laws. The bride then puts a little bit of salt in her husband"s palm. The groom returns it to her without spilling it. This is done thrice. This is first done with her husband thereafter performed with other members of the family.
It is believed that as the salt gets mixed with the food and provide characteristic flavor so should the daughter in law intermingle with her in laws and her husband. It is believed that there would be no arguments between the bride and other family members if this ritual is performed. It is conveyed through this ritual that she is going to be part of the new family.
