Widely known and esteemed Indian hockey player Bir Bhadur Chettri represented India as a part of the National Indian Hockey Team at the 1980 Olympics. The Olympic of 1980 was held in Moscow.

In the Preliminary Rounds of 1980 Olympics, India was unsuccessful against Tanzania (18-0), Poland (2-0), Cuba (13-0), and the Soviet Union (4-2). In the third round, they tied with Spain, but beat them in the Finals with a score of 4-3. Thus India won the gold medal in Hockey in that very year.
