Biju Patnaik University of Technology depending on the funding and the management can be classified into three types - the University maintained colleges, the trust colleges and the Orissa Government colleges.
The university offers an undergraduate program in engineering (Duration: 4 years) that awards a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) / Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree and in architecture (Duration: 5 years) that awards a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). The university also offers postgraduate programs that lead to Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (Engg) [M.Sc (Engg)], Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). The M.Sc (Engg) and Ph.D are research degrees while the rest are taught degrees.
