Bharatam
Bharatam is the Tamil version of the Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata. It was composed by the Tamil poet Villiputturar in 4300 viruttam poems.
The verses in the Tamil Bharatam (Bharatham) are composed in an eloquent and smooth flowing manner. Other than providing elaborate narration of the epic Kurukshetra War and the destiny of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, the Tamil version of the Mahabharata comprises of much devotional and philosophical content matter. The epic provides vivid description of the scenes of the grand war in a magnificent and swift style which tends to reflect the feel and atmosphere of the combat zone.
Similarly the narrative style in Bharatam varies in order to reflect various emotions and moods, such as pride, honour, grief and surprise. The renowned Tamil poet Villiputturar successfully accomplished in composing a Tamil version of the Mahabharata (Mahabharatam) which incorporates all of the essential and fascinating incidents and events mentioned in the original Sanskrit epic.
Villiputturar was adequately competent in writing an extremely graceful, prosaic and musical verses and hymns in Bharatam. The poet liberally implemented Sanskrit loan words along with colloquial Tamil to accomplish these effects.
