Bhakti Barve-lnamdar was an Indian film, theatre and television actress in Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati. She was associated with leading theatre groups like Theatre Unit, Indian National Theatre and Rangayan etc. She is best known for her role in Kundan Shah`s comedy "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro" with Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Shah and Ravi Baswani. Some of her notable plays are "Ti Phularani", "Nag Mandala", "Aayee Retire Hote Aahe" and "Hands Up" etc. Bhakti Barve was honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1990 for her acting in Marathi Theatre by India"s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. She was also awarded with Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar and Abhinay Puraskar. In the year 2001, she was honoured with a posthumous award at the Indian Telly Awards for her contribution to Indian cinema and television.
Early Life of Bhakti Barve-lnamdar
Bhakti Barve was born on 10th September 1948 in Sangli District of Maharashtra. From her school days she was interested in drama and participated in Sudha Karmarkar`s productions of children`s theatre.
Career of Bhakti Barve
Barve began her career by acting for Sudha Karmarkar`s "Little Theatre". She has also worked as an announcer in All India Radio, Mumbai. After that, she went on to join Doordarshan as a newsreader and producer. Her role of Bahinabai Choudhary, a poetess-saint, in the DD produced telefilm "Bahinabai" which was highly appreciated by the critics. Some of her notable plays in which she has worked in different roles, are "Ajab Nyaya Vartulacha" (C. T. Khanolkar`s adaptation of Brecht`s Caucasian Chalk Circle), "Adhe-adhure", "Tee Phul Rani" (P.L. Deshpande`s noted adaptation of G. B. Shaw`s Pygmalion) etc. She became extremely popular for her two Marathi plays naming "Hands-UP" and "Ranga Mazha Vegala". Bhakti Barve has also worked in many TV serials and Hindi films. Kundan Shah`s "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro" (1983) and Govind Nihlani`s "Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa" are the popular Hindi films in her career. She was the chairperson of the "Ranga Mazha Vegala". She had over 2500 performances in Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati to her credit and traveled to Germany, the USSR and the Gulf countries on acting assignments. Barve has also worked in a TV series named "Rishtey", which was aired from 1999 to 2001.
Death of Bhakti Barve-Inamdar
Bhakti Barve did a solo performance in "Pu La Fulrani Aani Mee" at Wai on 11th February 2001. The next morning (12th February), on her way back to Mumbai, she was met with an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which caused her untimely death.
