Berhampur University

Berhampur University is a university located near Berhampur in Orissa. It is one of the oldest and major universities of Orissa.

Berhampur University, OrissaBerhampur University was set up with an aim to provide the benefits of higher education to the people of south Orissa, to foster socio-economic growth of the region and to study, preserve and enrich the culture of south Orissa. It has a wide area under its jurisdiction comprising the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Nowrangapur, Malkangiri, Kandhamala and Boudh. Eleven Govt. colleges, sixty two non Govt. colleges and twenty six professional technical colleges are affiliated to Berhampur university.

History of Berhampur University
A bill was passed in the Orissa Legislative Assembly that led to the establishment of the university on 2 January 1967. It was inaugurated by Ayodhya Nath Khosla, the then Governor of Orissa and the first Chancellor of the University. Chemistry was the only visible research school of the university initially.

The decade from 1974 to 1984 witnessed a rise in research activities in the university. It opened new courses in Commerce, English, Home Science, Linguistics, Marine Sciences, Journalism and Mass Communication. In the 1980s and 1990s new departments were opened which included Business Administration, Computer Science, Electronic Science and Home Science.

The present campus is known as Bhanja Bihar which is named after one of the greatest poets of Orissa, Kabisamrat Upendra Bhanja. The university is around twelve kilometres away from the city of Berhampur.

Courses offered at Berhampur University
The university offers undergraduate, post graduate diploma/degree and research level and doctoral courses. The university has recently started self-financing courses in professional programmes like Pharmacy (degree-M. Pharma), M. Tech. in Electronic and Computer Sciences, Master of Finance and Control and M. Sc. in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

The university also offers distance learning in order to make educational facilities available to working people at modest fees.

The faculties of the college include: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business and Faculty of Law.
