Aims of Being

Aims of being are three in number according to Mahanirvana Tantra. They are dharma, artha and Kama. However, happiness has been considered as an aim irrespective of anything. One seeks happiness in all forms. It can be sensual, intellectual and spiritual. The source is Brahman, who is itself the source and essence of all ecstasy. Happiness can be higher and lower, momentary or durable or permanent. Those tread the path of desire seek it through the durable enjoyments of this world. Those who tread the path of return or nivritti marga seek happiness in everlasting union with their primal source. It is believed that man can never be happy till he seeks shelter with Brahman.

The eternal rhythm of the Divine Breath comes from spirit and enters the matter and inwards from matter to spirit. Devi evolves into the world as Maya. Pravritti is the path of out going and that of return nivritti each of which are divine. Bhukti and mukti are her gifts. All jiva on their way to humanity is on the forward path and seeks the enjoyment which is apt to its stage of evolution. The thirst for life persists till the point of return is reached and the leaving energy is exhausted completely. Till this time man remains on the path of desire. The strap of desire is in the hands of Devi. Devi is both desire and light of knowledge. However one cannot renounce till one has enjoyed.

There are terms made for the worldly life which is the outgoing of the Supreme. Tantrika has both Bhukti and mukti. However enjoyment also has its own law. Without restraint desire can let be loose. The mental self is the charioteer of the body. One needs to be controlled by Dharma. The first three aims of life or trivarga on the path of outgoing are dharma, artha and Kama.
