Monsang tribes are mainly found in the Chandel District that lies in the south-eastern part of Manipur. The Monsang tribes are concentrated in five villages including Liwa Sarei, Liwachaning, Heibunglok, Monsang Pantha and Japhou. The name of the tribe is the derivative of the name of a village, named Mosang where the Monsang tribes are located in a large number.
These Monsang tribes love to call themselves as ' Sirti 'or 'southerners', mainly speaking languages alike to that of other tribes of the region like Tangkhul, Marings, and Thadou. A language spoken by this tribal group is similar to Anals. Manipuri or Meiteilon languages are used while talking to some other tribal communities.
The Monsang tribal communities are segregated in two major clans namely Simputi and Rinheti. Each clan is divided in some other sub groups. Socio cultural norms too are quite ennobled as depicted in its plethora of festivals and joyful functions. Mainly agriculturists, many of them too have established trading expertise. For carrying out trading, these Lusai tribes are maintaining regular links. They make regular visits to marketplaces of Pallel, Kakching, Chandel and Imphal. Education has been given much importance in this tribal community.
