 Bahera, botanically known as Terminalia Bellerica is an ayurvedic medicinal plant. The part which is used for medicinal purpose is its fruit. It has good effects on many diseases. Belleric myrobalans are described as astringent and laxative and useful in cough, hoarseness, eye diseases, etc. As a constituent of triphala or the three myrobalans, they are used in almost all diseases. The kernel of the fruits is said to be narcotic and astringent, and is used as an external application to inflamed parts.
Dose of Bahera in Medicine In hoarseness, Belleric myrobalans, rock salt, and long pepper, rubbed into a paste with buttermilk, are recommended to be used as a linctus. Another prescription for sore throat and hoarseness is as follows. Belleric myrobalans are fried in clarified butter; they are then covered with a paste of wheat-flour and slightly roasted on a fire.
