Pizhichil is a therapy in Ayurveda which combines oil massage and heat treatment. It is considered as a king among the traditional therapies and a specialty of Kerala. The treatment emphasizes on gentle, synchronized massage of up and down on all parts of the body except the head. In the ancient days, this therapy was popularly known as the treatment for aristocrats and was mostly used by the Maharajas. This therapy is mainly recommended for extremely high Vata dosha types, muscular aches and pains, rheumatic problems, osteo arthritis, insomnia, depression, sexual problems. Pizhichil ensures myriad health benefits. Usually, the treatment of Pizhichil lasts fourteen to twenty-eight days.
Steps of Performing Pizhichil
The massage is performed by two to four trained therapists under the supervision of a physician. The objective of the massage is to cover the entire body so the therapy is administered in seven standard positions.
Firstly, the patient has to lie on the treatment table. Then a cloth dipped in lukewarm medicated oil is squeezed over his body uniformly. Then the oil is rubbed smoothly over his body by masseurs on either side. The massage session may take an hour including continuous oil pouring over the body, then rubbing and stimulating the skin using hands and special cotton cloths.
The masseurs should make sure that the patient’s head should not get sweat during the treatment. Also, to prevent oil from getting into the massage taker’s eyes, a cloth should be tied over the forehead of the therapy taker. Fresh medicated oil should be used every day. The duration of this therapy is decided by the Ayurveda expert after the body constitution of the individual has been determined.
