Pune is famed as the cultural capital of Maharashtra state sheltering people belonging to different ethnicities. The city enjoys an exquisite confluence of cosmopolitan and traditional cultures.
Currently Pune is popular as an automobile destination and a major IT and educational hub of India. Apart from FTII, another institute called National Film Archive of India (NFAI) in the city makes it further more alluring for the celluloid lovers. National Film Archive of India (NFAI) was recognized in the year 1964, as a media unit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Government of India. The objective of Pune International Film Festival is to acquire, preserve and restore the rich heritage of national cinema, and the cream of international cinema. The place has played a crucial role in the cinematic journey of the country and has furnished some of the finest actors, filmmakers and technicians.
All these factors formed the basis of the initiation of Pune International Film Festival in 2002. Presently the festival forms a significant event for the film fraternity that invites film buffs not only from India but also from across the globe. In the year 2012, the vernacular film 'Ha Bharat Mazha' received the Sant Tukaram Best Marathi Film award and the Lifetime Achievement Awards were awarded to actor Amitabh Bachchan and singer Asha Bhosle.
The 12th Pune International Film Festival will be held from 9th to 16th January, 2014.
