Jivdhan Fort, also known as Jeevdhan Fort, is a hill fort which is located in Junnar Taluka in the district of Pune in Maharashtra state, India. It is situated in the Sahyadris Mountain Range and is at a height of 3754 feet (1145 m) above sea level. The fortress is almost 30 km away from the present Naryangoan town in Junnar taluka. Jivdhan is one of the Famous 5 forts in the region, along with Chavand Fort, Hadsar Fort, Shivneri Fort and Naneghat Fort. The structure was damaged to a great extent after the army of the British East India Company besieged the fortress between 1815 and 1818. At present, the site has become a popular trekking destination.
History of Jivdhan Fort
Jivdhan Fort was built during the reign of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who was the founder of the Maratha Empire. It was primarily used as fortified military post to keep watch over the movements of the enemy forces. There is an open field of around 3 km from Jivdhan Fort to Naneghat Fort. This provides a panoramic and unhindered view of the territory. However, the structure was occupied by army of the British East India Company under the command of Colonel Prother in 1818. They also destroyed all entry points into the fortress.
Architecture of Jivdhan Fort
There are a few storehouses at the top of the fortress which are still unexplored. There are also some water cisterns near the warehouses. These reservoirs supplied fresh water to the residents of Jivdhan Fort. The pinnacle near fort is almost 385 feet in height. This pinnacle is known as Vanderlingi. The top of the fort offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area and the various forts and hilltops located nearby can be seen clearly. The Junnar plateau, Manikdoh Dam, Naneghat Fort, Ratangad Fort, Chavand Fort and Harishchandragad Fort are also visible from here.
