Early Life of Venkatesan Devarajan
This humble lanky boy from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu comes from a middle class family and has tasted massive success over the years. He has been a popular face in the amateur boxing circuit for India, and has risen to the level of qualifying for the Olympics and winning the world cup Bronze medal at Bangkok at 1994.
For V. Devarajan, the game of boxing has been a family sport. He, at a very young age, gained unflinching inspiration and support from his father. He excelled to great heights and achieved what few boxers, before Vijender Singh, could achieve. His brothers, Baskaran and Harikrishnan, also achieved fame in boxing.
Career of Venkatesan Devarajan
When Devarajan won Bronze medal at the 1994 World Cup in Bangkok, he was only 20 years old. Many of the experts, who saw him, were stuck by his innocent face, which was radically different from the boxers from India during that time.
An emphatic win over Kamsing Somluck from Thailand, in front of a baying home crowd was the highlight of Deva's outstanding and unforgettable Cup performance. At the pinnacle of his boxing career, this boxer from Chennai, who was adjudged the best of Indian Railways in 1995, had defeated top notch boxing stars from almost all the big boxing countries.
Even after his boxing career as a professional boxer got over, he continued to serve young, talented boxers with potentials, by giving them appropriate trainings and tips. The sorry state of young boxers continues to strike a chord with him. For all the services and training that he provides he doesn't charge a penny. His love for boxing is deep. He was also among the jury member for Arjuna award selectors in 2009.
