Mamtha Maben, born on 15th November 1970 in Bengaluru, is a popular name in the women cricket circuit in India. She is known for her innate cricketing skills. Her unique fielding style has own her lot of appreciation from all and sundry. Right from her childhood she had fascination for game of cricket, and always wanted to make a career out of the game. Statistics indicate that she has had a tremendous cricketing career over the years. She was made the captain of the women cricket team, and started out her captaincy stint in style against New Zealand. Mamatha Maben is better known for her middle order batting and medium pace bowling.
She was selected for the Karnataka Team at the age of 17 years and being a skilled cricketer, she grabbed on to the opportunity. She gave good performances at the national level for 6 years at a continuous level which made her place in the World Cup squad - Women's World Cup 1993 in England.
The entire cricket career of Mamtha Maben is filled with success stories. She is popularly known as all rounder from Bengaluru who played for India in 1993, when the team travelled to England for the World Cup. Ever since that series, she found it difficult to get a place in the side. Until 2001-02 tour of England, she did not get call to the Indian squad. On the opening day of CricInfo Rani Jhansi Trophy Mamtha Maben suffered a serious setback, when she injured her shoulder. When the domestic matches of 2001 were played, she made a strong comeback, scoring consistently throughout the year. Mamtha Maben was further rewarded by making her selection into the team.
