Mohan Samant was born in the year 1924. He had spent most of his life in New York. He was trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art. He was also a member of Bombay Progresive Artists' group. (Jan 22, 2004)
He has won the gold medal of the Academy of Fine Arts of Calcutta and that of the Bombay Art Society. He mastered Basholi miniature painting under M. Palsikar. He was honored by Hillary Clinton during her senatorial campaign as the best artist living in Manhattan. He was influenced by painters like Paul Klee and Picasso.
He had explored the imagery of Egyptian funerary wall drawings, Ajanta murals and Rajput miniatures. This enabled him to establish several primeval images in his work. However he has been living in New York since the year 1968. His paintings are basically mixed media as the heterogeneous elements are blended inn order to create simple yet unique creations. His paintings are abstract, however it maintain figurative aspects. His use of texture is one of the most interesting aspects of his paintings.
