Chittrovanu Mazumdar was born in the year 1956 in Kolkata. In 1981 he graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts. His paintings operate on fracture. It is composed of bold brushstrokes, has elements of collage, abstract spaces and layered figurative imagery. Mazumdar's canvases create a powerful emotional response. He has held a variety of solo and group shows in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Paris and New York, including special exhibitions such as 'Exhibition for the African National Congress', Kolkata Information Centre, Kolkata 1988 and 'Confluence Art Camp for French & Indian artists', Alliance Francaise, Kolkata, 1992, Saffronart in Los Angeles 2001 and Saffronart & The Guild, 2004.
Chittrovanu Mazumdar's work pulls from various influences. He believes that art is a private activity for the artist. His references include inputs from his culturally diverse upbringing in Kolkata and Paris. Major shifts in style and form - from painting to multimedia environments and sound sculpture are visible in his works.
