History of Lala Lajpat Rai College
In the year 1959, Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Trust was formed on the eve of the birth centenary celebration of Late Lala Lajpat Rai. The aim with which the trust was formed was to fulfill the objectives of Lala Lajpat Rai. Lalaji was interested in almost all the fields of activities contributing to the enrichment of national and social life, but it is known that education received prime importance from him. Thus, Indias third Prime Minister, late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri thought that the most appropriate way to commemorate the memory of the great patriot was to establish an institution of higher education.
The first step towards the establishment of Lala Lajpat Rai College was the allotment of a piece of land measuring about 26,000 square feet on a fairly nominal rent by Government of Maharashtra. Achievement of this piece of land is attributed to the efforts of Late Shri Yashwantrao Chavan. The construction of the present college building is attributed to the contribution made by the generous philanthropists and donations made by the trustees.
After the establishment of the Lala Lajpat Rai Institute, attention was shifted to the establishment of the Lala Lajpatrai College of Commerce and Economics.
