K.C. College or Kishinchand Chellaram College is situated at Dinshaw Wacha Road, Churchgate in Mumbai
and is operating under the Hyderabad
(Sind) National Collegiate Board. K.C. College was established in the year 1954 to spread the light of education in independent India. Over the years, the college has established itself as one of the largest, most popular and most dynamic educational institutions in Mumbai. The institution was awarded 'A' grading by NAAC in the year 2004.
History of K.C. College:
The founders of the K.C. College were its first Principal, K.M. Kundnani and Barrister Advani, both of whom helped a lot to set up the college with their vast experiences. The K.C. College was only the second educational institution to be established in Mumbai, under the supervision of the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board, HSNC (B). The globally scattered Sindhi community helped a lot in the establishment of the college. However, it was the Kishinchand Chellaram family that contributed most to the college's founding and that is why, the college was named after the family. The Watumull family was also a prominent contributor. Though, the first batch comprising 1800 students was admitted in the college from 1st June, 1954, the formal inauguration of the college was done by the then Chief Minister of Mumbai, Shri Morarji Desai on 15th of August, 1954.
Objective of K.C. College:
The Kishinchand Chellaram College or K.C. College started its journey with certain objectives. This college was established with the objective of salvation through knowledge and quality education. Its vision is to emerge as a centre of academic excellence. K.C. College is aimed at providing value based education and ensuring holistic development of students, preparing them for worldwide challenges.
Courses Offered at K.C. College:
The College offers various courses in different streams like Science, Arts, Commerce, etc. at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The courses offered at K.C. College include B.Sc., B.A., B.Com, M.Sc., M.A., etc. The college provides B.Sc. course in the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Micro Biology, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Statistics, Mathematics, etc. The college offers M.Sc. (by research) courses in subjects like Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry (Nuclear and Radiochemistry) and Microbiology. On the other hand, the M.Sc. (by papers) courses include subjects like Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.
Further, the K.C. College offers B.A. Course in subjects like English, Hindi, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, History, Ancient Indian Culture (up to 2nd year), Political Science, etc. The college provides M.A. course in Hindi and M.Sc. in Information Technology as well. The college also offers B.Com course in Commerce and Accountancy. Some specialised courses are also offered at K.C. College. The specialised courses include Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M.), B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Sc. Information Technology, B.Com in Accounting and Finance (B.A.F.), B.Com in Banking and Insurance (B.B.I.), B.Com in Financial Markets (B.F.M.), etc. Apart from these, a few Ph.D. courses are also offered in the K.C. College as well. These courses are offered in Hindi, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry (Nuclear and Radiochemistry). The college also provides Post Graduate Diploma courses like DMLT - P.G. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology and DTAC - P.G. Diploma in Technical and Analytical Chemistry.
Various Associations of K.C. College:
The college is closely linked with a number of bodies and student organisations that provide support in overall development of the students and alos improved the quality of education provided by the college. Amongst them, The Rotaract Club, Vigyan Kiran, The Cherub's Club, Sindhi Association, Science Honours Program, The Nature Club, N.S.S., Students' Council, Employment Cell, The Culture Club, Marathi Mandal and the Women Development Cell are the most noteworthy.
Facilities at K.C. College:
K.C. College has one of the best infrastructures among all the educational institutions in Mumbai. It is probably the only college in Mumbai that has its own radio centre and a nuclear chemistry research centre. The college also has an air-conditioned auditorium with nearly 600 seating capacity, a wooden floored indoor badminton court and a community hall. The inter-collegiate fest named Kiran, organised by the K.C. College is a popular college festival in Mumbai. The BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media) department of the college also hosts another inter-collegiate fest called Blitzkrieg.
Eminent industrialist, Anil Ambani and successful actors, Rajesh Khanna
and Jitendra Kapoor are the most famous alumni of the college. Since its inception, K.C. College has done a great job by providing quality education at various levels and has also achieved its objectives to a large extent. The college has established itself as one of the most desired institutions for the students, who are keen to get into professional colleges for medicine and engineering. The dynamism of its faculty and the extraordinary academic achievements of the college have helped a lot in the growth of K.C. College.
