Malyavan was the main consultant to the Emperor of Lanka, Ravana. In Ramayana it is said that Malyavan was an esteemed personality within the intellectual and royal circles in Lanka. Malyavan was against the combat with Lord Rama and had tried to convince Ravana to free Sita. Malyavan's advised was rejected by Ravana. After the death of Ravana, Malyavan continued his position and became the chief adviser to Vibishana, Ravana's younger brother and Malyavan's second grandson.
Malyavan is also one of Shiva's principal attendants. But he was punished by leaving the paradise. Malyavan was reborn as a normal human being.
Malyavan is also a name of a mountain in the east of Meru.
