The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College was initially a fifty-bed Indian Military Hospital at Dharavi. and now called as Sion Hospital. The transformation from the army barracks to the modern hospital has been a slow but a steady progress.
The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College was the first to start the Trauma Care Center in India. Every year the Trauma Ward handles more than three thousand patients. The hospital`s Intensive Care Unit was in news for treating emergencies like the chlorine gas leak in 1985, the plague epidemic in 1994 and the Bhiwandi food poisoning in the year 1996. The Pediatric and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have introduced advanced treatment facilities for the newborns and the young children. The Hospital is prepared and alert to deal with any kind of crisis situation.
The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College is the youngest of the three major metropolitan teaching hospitals of Greater Mumbai. This college is recognized internationally as it has been continuously providing quality health care to the citizens of Mumbai ever since its inception. The college has a rich alumni base.
